The Congregation of the Sisters of the Little Flower

of Bethany, Mangalore, India

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Little Flower of Bethany, Mangalore, (India) founded by Msgr Raymond Francis Camillus Mascarenhas on 16 July 1921, in St Sebastian parish of Bendur in response to the pastoral and educational needs, particularly to be in service of the girl children, women and rural masses of the Diocese of Mangalore and society at large.

The outstanding feature of the Congregation is, that it was founded on the Indian soil by an Indian priest, belonging to the Diocese of Mangalore, Karnataka, India with four native lady teachers, Marceline Menezes, Flora Mathias, Alice Mathias and Regina Gertrude Gonsalves.

Being rooted in Indian culture, this Congregation has spread rapidly to the length and breadth of the country and at present has foundations in Italy, Germany, France  Mauritania  in West Africa and Senegal.

Bethany had a simple beginning with compassionate love of Jesus, personal holiness and contemplation being its ideals. Self reliance, dignity of labour, simplicity of life, education in the vernacular, with a special focus on primary education, particularly girls, adult education, vocational education and improvement of villages for the progress of the country and development of women were some of the priorities that the Founder and the founding members upheld much against the criticism of the elite of the society who could not appreciate the nuns engaging themselves in the works done by the common people of the villages. However, these characteristics have made Bethany relevant to the society.

Today we have 170 communities with 1305 Sisters, 95 novices, 51 postulants and about 145 candidates, hailing from different states of India. We serve in forty-seven dioceses in India and six dioceses abroad.
